Make the brine. In a large bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, garlic, salt, sugar, smoked paprika and black pepper.
Add the drumsticks, making sure that it is completely covered by the brine.
Cover the bowl and refrigerate overnight.
When ready to air fry, mix together the garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper and pepper to taste.
Preheat air fryer to 400°F. Remove the drumsticks from the brine and pat away excess brine.
Coat the drumsticks with avocado oil.
Sprinkle the seasoning mixture over the drumsticks. Sprinkle on salt to taste.
Place drumsticks in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to fry the drumsticks in two batches.
Air fry the drumsticks for 20-25 minutes, rotating the drumsticks halfway through cooking. Drumsticks should be golden brown and the internal temperature should be at least 165°F.
Serve immediately with any side you desire. Enjoy!
Notes:
Sweet or hot paprika may be substituted for smoked paprika if desired.
