Cooking Class - 5-Day Foodie Fun Teens: Advanced Baking - Cincinnati

What You’ll Do

Expose your teens to the world of culinary creativity, starting with advanced baking skills.

Learning from an expert chef, future foodies will tie up their aprons and get to work crafting an array of sweet and savory baked goods. From mixing and kneading homemade doughs to whisking up a silky smooth batter and all the secrets to perfectly proofing bread, they will bake, steam or boil, they will be master bakers by the end of the week. Each participant takes home a printed menu and certificate of graduation.

Classes typically run for two to two and a half hours, unless specified otherwise. Group work is a key component; kids can expect to collaborate with four other students. The class involves standing, cooking and active participation throughout. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are required and long hair should be securely tied back for safety. This was definitely an unexpected experience all around. The cooking class is hosted by Sur La Table. About 5 minutes after the class was scheduled to start, all ~16 students were standing outside the room waiting to go in. The chef finally came out with a roster and she actually yelled at people to “hurry up” and get inside. The class continued with some of of that same chaotic energy and a few “unprofessional” comments (“the pans are ribbed for her pleasure”) given the crowd (father/son). The food was tasty, but nothing incredible. My partner and I both felt like we didn’t learn anything new, but enjoyed our time there.

I was lucky enough to attend two classes recently, both taught by Kate. First, we went with some friends to a sushi making class. Then last week I went with a different friend to learn to make stuffed pasta. I thoroughly enjoyed both experiences and feel like I learned a lot and will be able to put those things into practice. I've already used one of the recipes I came home with for a winter squash salad that's delicious.
